I believe we should never allow third trimester abortions as long as we wish to keep a shred of morality in this world. I believe abortions should only be legal in the case of rape or incest. People need to deal with their own responsibilities and actions. When someone does something like committing a crime they are held responsible. Why would someone not also be responsible for having sex? I know a lot of people would probably disagree but that is just my opinion. I'm always open to hear how people feel on the subject as I know it's a really hot topic.

Very interesting, and very deep, waters here. What do we know about the experience of pain, for a fetus or for a newborn? Does pain mean anything without a referent of experience? And how would we know?

i believe that we are on the verge of being able to detect "pain" (albeit, perhaps emmotional pain, psychosomatic pain, or even remembered pain) through neuroimaging of adults. But does the adult brain's reaction to painful stimuli tell us anything about the reaction to those stimuli of the infant, let alone the fetus?

I don't know the answer to that question - I just know that the answer, to me at least, seems non-obvious. And not something on which I necessarily trust the scientific and medical judgment of Nebraska's unicameral legislature. (Though, to be honest, I doubt that it would make any difference to me if Nebraska, like every other state, had a bicameral legislature!)
